tvnz.co.nz's Michael Burgess looks at the key statistics
emerging from the Federer-Murray clash on Sunday night.
Dark cloud
Andy Murray has now played in two Grand Slam finals without
managing to win a set. The last man to lose his first two major
finals in straight sets was Frenchman Cedric Pioline. And although
it is an unfair comparison as Pioline was little more than a
journeyman, the dark cloud for Murray is that the Frenchman never
made another Grand Slam decider.
Everest without oxygen
By conceding the first two sets to Federer, the Scot set himself
the tennis equivalent of climbing Everest - without oxygen.
Amount of grand slam matches Federer has won after taking the first
two sets: 155.
Amount of grand slam matches he has lost: Ah, that would be
zero.
Come in Jimmy
As of this Monday morning, Federer has now spent a total
of 268 weeks on the top of the ATP world rankings and is tied with
Jimmy Connors in third spot. The all time leader is Pete Sampras,
who is just 19 weeks ahead of the Swiss ace.
The Gambler
Federer remains a gambler always prepared to go for his shots. He
made 42 unforced errors but also hit 46 winners whereas Murray was
much more circumspect with figures of 36 and 29 respectively.
Epic tiebreak
It did not quite reach the levels of the famous Bjorn
Borg vs John McEnroe tiebreak at Wimbledon in 1981, but lasting 24
points, and featuring five set points for Murray and three match
points for Federer the 20 minute climax to the third set was a
beauty.
Pointing it out
From the baseline Federer took 56 points to Murray's 59
but the difference came at the net where the Swiss took 31 points
compared to the Scot's 14.
