Murray plays Russian roulette, the mysterious 'Roy' creates a stir and Federer makes more history as tvnz.co.nz wraps up the Australian Open
Player of the day
Roger Federer. 16 Grand Slams and now joins Andre Agassi as
the only man to win four times at Melbourne Park. The 28-year-old
Swiss never really gave Murray a chance with a brutally clinical
display of masterful tennis.
Thought of the day
Will crying become the tradition for the loser at Melbourne
Park? Andy Murray follows Federer last year in becoming emotional
at the microphone and had to cut off his speech
Starstruck
Could be hard to top this one. Walking through the labyrinth
of corridors under the Rod Laver arena, I was mildly surprised to
see a certain R Federer standing in the corridor outside dressing
room number three.
"Tell him to come and see us here", he shouted at a tournament official. "His name is Roy." Who exactly is he - and could I pass for a Roy?
Moment of the day
In an epic third set tiebreak Murray twice missed regulation
shots to blow two set points. He fought well to save two match
points, but giving Federer more championship points is like playing
Russian Roulette.
Quote of the day(1)
"It was not too bad, I haven't lost a set yet. But I had
already seen the trophy in my hand" - Federer admits he was
struggling to put a positive spin on things when Murray came up
with a miracle shot to save a match point.
Quote of the day(2)
"It is nice playing for the history books but that is not
everything" - Federer on his incredible haul of Grand Slam
trophies.
Shot of the day
Andy Murray, all over the net, clubbed a heavy forehand smash
into the back of the court. Federer guesses right and somehow sends
a 155km/h forehand winner back past a stunned Murray.
Fan of the day
Megan Gale and Eric Bana made up one hell of a celebrity duo
courtside at Rod Laver arena. Most were unable to get tickets, but
the kilted Scots all around Grand Slam Oval made for a fantastic
atmosphere.
Foodwatch
Chicken drumsticks, pasties and potato wedges made for a hell
of a media feed. No stopping some gentleman, who were taking
cupfuls of the chicken nibbles. Later as we waited for Federer -
who eventually made it to the press conference at 12:45am - more
slices, cakes and treats were dolled out in a very sweet end to the
tournament.
