Marc Gicguel showed there is real fight in the French flag, gaining a hard-earned 3-6 6-4 6-4 over fellow veteran Agustin Calleri.
The 31-year-old Frenchman and the 32-year-old Argentine put on a grand show for the centre court crowd in a match that lasted for just under two hours.
After taking the first set, the Argentine seemed to tire, especially in the third set while Gicguel got stronger as the match progressed.
Calleri sent down nine aces but will rue a first serve percentage of 45%, while Gicguel managed 61% despite seven double faults.
Games went with serve with in the first set until Calleri managed two late breaks to take the set in 35 minutes.
Seemingly stung by this, world number 52 Gicguel seized an early break in the third game of the second set and wasn't letting go, hanging on to his slender advantage to take the match to a deciding set.
The final set saw Gicguel, who achieved a career high ranking of 37 in 2008, break the Calleri serve twice in a row to seize a 5-2 lead.
The Argentine refused to surrender, grabbing a break back and closing to 5-4 but Gicguel, aided by some big serves, held his nerve to close out the set 6-4 and the match
