Kiwi teens out of ASB Classic qualifying

Three local wildcard entrants have been knocked out of the qualifying tournament for the ASB Classic.

The qualifying draw presented a tough task for the teens Katherine Westbury, 17, Leela Beattie, 16 and Emily Fanning, 15.

Katherine Westbury, the highest ranked of the trio at around 600 was ousted by American Jill Craybas, a veteran of the Auckland tournament and ranked 98.

Unranked Leela Beattie, 16 put up a good fight before falling in straight sets against Italian Corinna Dentoni ranked 149.

Fanning lost to Brit Katie O'Brien ranked at 181.

Inspite of the loss of the three teens, New Zealand will still be represented at the tournament which starts on Monday.

New Zealand's top two tennis players, Sacha Jones and Marina Erakovic, both face Russian opponents in their opening matches.

Jones faces Russian third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and Erakovic plays Elena Vesnina.

Tournament top seed Maria Sharapova will play Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.
