A new tool launched today aims to educate and protect the privacy of Generation Y on the internet, amid growing fears over the lack of safety on the web.
Developed by the Privacy Commission, with help from teenagers, the tool kit comes with posters, pamphlets and a DVD.
It contains safety tips for social networking, including using a variety of different passwords for different sites. It also provides pointers on organisations that hold private information.
The aim is to make secondary school students aware of just how public their private information can be, and how one public pronouncement could affect their future.
"In some cases there may be serious employment consequences, and
there can be serious financial consequences," says Privacy
Commissioner Maria Shroff.
In a recent Privacy Commission study, more than half of the people
surveyed thought details held by Facebook and other sites were
private, although that's not always the case.
But a group of teenagers with their fingers on the social networking pulse, have used their social networking nous to give good examples to the commission for the kit.
"There are people profiling you to sell products to you," said Daniel Friar, a youth support worker who contributed. "Whatever information you may release now, can come back to haunt you in the future."
