The tills may not be singing their usual seasonal song this year, but at home we're clicking for Christmas.

While pedestrian counts and purchases are down on main street due to the recession, internet experts say close to half of the country is shopping online.

The chairman of the Internet Advertising Bureau, Kevin Bowler, says transactions for this year are almost double this year what they were last year, with Christmas traffic up about 10%.

However like his retail counterparts in the non-virtual world, the value of purchases is well down.

Bowler says the most popular categories are music, books and DVDs and says Ferrit is doing well, but TradeMe still dominates.

I got all my christmas presents from http://offtheback.co.nz - the deals they have are incredible and you can just shop throughout the year at your leisure.

I have done my shopping the old-fashioned way in malls around Auckland. It's a miracle no one was clubbed to death in a fit of shopping rage. Maybe next year, I might get organised and buy everything online - for the safety of the shopping public.

No I haven't finished yet! But have done a mixture of online and old skool, and yep online is great for advance buys but my last-minute ones will have to be on-foot~
