Well, I knew in today's day and age, it would only be a matter of time before I found myself attending a party that would be simulcast over the internet.

The occasion is the Auckland leg of the worldwide Twestival, held at Sale St bar Thursday night from 5pm till 9pm (although if you're keen to keep going beyond 9pm, I'm sure the bar won't stop you from pushing on).

The strange name comes from the fact that the party is organised as a meet up for users of Twitter, a social networking application.

Twitter is described as a micro blogging network, but to break that down to English, it seems to be Facebook with just the status updates.

To be fair there's a range of mobile options which I have not had the chance to explore, so it could also be seen as a convenient and cheap way to send a text message to everyone in your address book.

The Auckland Twestival is one of three being held in New Zealand on Thursday evening, the other two being held at Mighty Mighty in Wellington from 5:30pm and His Lordships Cafe and Bar in Christchurch. How very colonial of you, Christchurch.

Like any good event of this nature, there's a charity element with the $10 entry fee going to a good cause - Charity: Water, a global organisation dedicated to bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. Their claim of $20 being able to bring clean drinking water to one person for 20 years sure is impressive and has me feeling like the bottled water companies are taking me for a ride.

You can find out more about Charity: Water at charitywater.org . You can also check out the party for yourself or head back to tvnz.co.nz for an interview with the organisers and some of the punters.
