A study by UMR Research says people who use social networking sites, like Facebook, are far less likely to know the names of their neighbours than others.
The online survey of 1,000 people found that people who use social networking sites at least once a day knew fewer of their neighbours, than those who used the sites less often.
It says 30% of social networkers did not know the names of anyone at all, compared to 11% of respondents who did not use such websites regularly.
Under 30 year-olds were also less likely to know the their neighbours than others, with 44% saying they did not compared to 25% of those aged 30-44 years, 13% of 45-59 year olds and 7% of those 60 and over.
UMR Research says overall one in five New Zealanders are strangers to their neighbours.
