New Zealanders have embraced social networking and micro-blogging and believe it is here to stay, according to new research.
Blogs, streaming video and podcasting, as well as social platforms such as Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and Twitter, are showing ever-increasing popularity, market researcher Perceptive found.
The company asked 1000 New Zealanders aged 15 to 65-plus about their online habits and found 88% believed the social media were a part of everyday life. Twitter, the new kid on the block, has been taken up enthusiastically, with 6% of those surveyed saying they regularly "twitter".
This is even more than the reported 5% of the United States population who admit twittering.
"This is in line with New Zealand's growing acceptance of social media as an everyday means of communicating both socially, and increasingly, for business reasons too, said Perceptive managing director Chris Pescott.
The survey found nearly a third of people read blogs regularly, with 8 percent writing their own.
Other findings included:
- 58% used Facebook
- 18% used Bebo
- 7% used MySpace
- 3% used LinkedIn.
The Attitude New Zealand report showed Kiwis had embraced online banking and shopping, with 83% regularly paying their bills, making transfers and checking their balances on the internet.
It found 72% of respondents enjoyed shopping online, with their favourite sites identified as TradeMe (28%), EziBuy (4%), and Amazon 3%.
Favourite websites were TradeMe (20%), followed by Google and Facebook (10% each).
