An astronaut had some anxious moments during a spacewalk outside the International Space Station with a possible airleak from his spacesuit.

Danny Olivas had just helped attach a huge tank to the space station when he noticed fraying on the finger of his right glove.

It took several minutes for mission control to give him the all clear.

On Tuesday the spacewalking astronauts lost touch with ground controllers for 33 minutes when a storm knocked out their radio link.

Olivas and Nicole Stott kept working outside the International Space Station during the communications blackout under the watchful eyes of their crewmates. They were about halfway through their planned six-and-a-half-hour spacewalk when the communications blackout occurred.

Discovery arrived at the station on Sunday to deliver more than 7 tons of  food, supplies, equipment and spare parts to the $US100 billion orbital outpost, a project of 16 nations that is nearing completion after more than a decade of construction.

The shuttle is due back at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on September 10.
