Wayne Rooney's equalising goal during the Champions League final sent tweeters crazy, with the micro-blogging site recording the second highest spike in tweets per second (TPS) ever.
The Manchester United striker scored five minutes after the opening goal by Barcelona's Pedro during the final at Wembley on Sunday.
Twitter recorded a high of 6303 tweets per second when Rooney scored, followed closely by 6277 tweets per second when David Villa then put Barcelona up 3-1 over Man U with an 18-metre curler.
The TPS high came close to topping the all-time record of 6939, recorded just after the new year in Japan.
'Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu', meaning 'Happy New Year' was the most common tweet on January 1.
The Twitter frenzy sets a new high for TPS for a sporting event, previously held by Super Bowl XLV which came in at a peak of 4064 TPS.
Recently Twitter saw a traffic spike of 22% in the rush to find the identity of a Premier League footballer at the centre of the Twitter super-injunction row in Britian.
The footballer has now been identified as Manchester United
midfielder Ryan Giggs.
Giggs accused Twitter of releasing details that should have
remained private under the terms of a court order.
