Two New Zealand inventors think that they have created a revolutionary new umbrella - one that can withstand howling wind and fierce rain storms without breaking.

The original umbrella has not been updated since the 1800s, quickly giving the current invention international attention.

The umbrella is called the Blunt and is already going global, with its popularity steadily growing in Japan.

People in windy cities have tended to stick to using raincoats rather than the umbrella because they are not built to withstand strong wind.

"I just use the rain coat because every time you walk past you just see them broken in the rubbish bin," says a Wellingtonian.

But the Blunt has been built to be sturdy to hold, making people feel in control of their umbrella in windy conditions.

The device sits inside a pocket at the edge of the canopy, pushing outwards and making the canopy tighter, which strengthens the umbrella.

"We've built an umbrella here that's a little more expensive than the average umbrella - but it's also built to last," says inventor Greig Brebner.
