A survey has found one in four high school students has been sexually solicited online.

The finding is part of an on-going Netsafe study, which is looking at students' internet use, the challenges they face and how they deal with them.

Netsafe knowledge officer John Fenaughty says around a quarter of students surveyed had been asked to do something sexual online they didn't want to do.

He says half the students were upset about it and half weren't concerned.

Fenaughty says parents should make sure their children know what to do if they're solicited online.

He says parents should remember teenagers are probably five times more competent at using the internet than they are.

He says parents should let their children know it's ok to talk about what happens to them online if they're upset.
