New Zealand's newest animation studio, Oktobor, opened in Auckland today, boosting the hopes for those looking for careers in the TV and film industry.
Although Oktobor only officially opened for business today, it has already landed a plum contract with one of the world's biggest production houses.
The Penguins Of Madagascar, a spin-off of the popular Madagascar film series, is just one of the programmes that will be made by Oktobor.
It is part of a three-year contract with Nickelodeon studios, the world's biggest producer of television animation.
It is good news for new graduates, as the studio will open up more opportunities in New Zealand's relatively small animation industry.
"Traditionally, getting a job within animation is very difficult because it's always seen as very sexy and the most glamorous role," said Media Design School 3D course leader James Cunningham
"This is actually quite unusual where there's an opportunity for entry level animation positions."
But those considering a career in animation beware - not all courses are created equal.
Cunningham said that many courses offer excellent training but some "are pretty rough around the edges".
The studio currently employs 80 animators. This number is set to grow to 120 by March next year and 360 by 2012.
