The Victorian bushfires didn't just have a human toll with hundreds of animals in the fire zones left burnt and injured.
But a skincare product developed in New Zealand is helping heal the survivors.
In the land known as the lucky country, some of Australia's most celebrated creatures have been left lying low but help is literally on hand.
Margaret Holloway developed Nemidon as a skincare product for diabetics and people with skin disorders. Now the lotion has turned out to be a life-saver.
Nemidon helps heal the skin of burned animals, particularly young marsupials known as "pinkies", left orphaned by the fires.
"It's shocking, it's one of the worst we've seen, so many animals, thousands of animals have been affected," says Holloway.
The moisturiser, made from seaweed harvested along NZ's east coast, does the job a marsupial's pouch would normally do by hydrating the youngster's skin and helping prevent infection.
"If they get an infection that can lead ultimately to death," Holloway says.
The company has donated thousands of dollars worth of product to grateful volunteers.
