Microblogging and social networking site Twitter is celebrating its fourth birthday.

Twitter, fuelled by smartphones and online bursts of 140 characters, has soared to lofty heights, with 50 million Tweets per day being sent last month.

As shown on Mashable , Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sent the first Tweet four years ago.

It said: "Just setting up my twttr."

The rest, as they say, is history.
