Thousands of New Zealand Facebook users are upset over policy changes made by the social-networking site.

Changes to Facebook's terms of service include a new line stating it will retain ownership of anything posted, even after the account has been cancelled.

A lawyer specialising in internet issues, Peter Dengate-Thrush says a lot privacy principles people rely on here, tend to only apply to official agencies and Government departments.

He says they don't really apply to private situations.

Dengate-Thrush says people must also recognise they are dealing with a business that's operating outside the country which isn't subject to New Zealand laws or customs.

He says if they put themselves inside the jurisdiction in some way they may be held subject to the law, but the reality is they're not here and New Zealand courts do not have anyone to put in front of them.
