A government-led scientific bureau in Australia says biotechnology is helping to develop crops that can withstand climate change.
The Bureau of Rural Sciences says genetic modifications have developed crops more capable of withstanding heat, water and nitrogen.
The bureau says GM insect-resistant cotton is very effective in controlling pests, and new GM technologies could help to reduce methane and nitrous oxide emissions.
That would lead to a reduction in the use of nitrogenous fertiliser.
It says further investigations into biotechnology for the agricultural sector need to be encouraged and adequately funded.
