The Commerce Commission says there has been steady improvement in broadband quality in the latest quarter.
The commission on Wednesday released it report on the quality of services provided by New Zealand's internet service providers (ISPs) for the three months to June 2009.
The report shows Telecom had more than 99.99% internet availability throughout May, while Snap, TelstraClear Cable, Woosh and WorldxChange managed to do the same during July.
Performance was generally better near Auckland where most web traffic is routed. Browsing speeds in Auckland were six megabytes per second but just over 3Mbps in Dunedin.
The Commission says changes are being made by some ISPs to improve browsing speeds for South Island cities.
Telecommunications Commissioner Ross Patterson says the improvements seen in the latest quarter have been led by increased investment in the sector.
However, he says more investment will be needed to continue
improvements, particularly through performance enhancing measures
such as caching.
