Dec 18 - Kuini

Dec 18 - Painting of Queen Elizabeth with a Moko is causing offence

Whakatakariri ana nga Naori o te Papaioea i tetahi whakaahua e iri ana i te whare pupuri mahi toi o reira.
Maori in Palmerston North are upset at a painting hanging in there downtown art & farming store.

Ko te whakaahua ra, o te kuini o ingarangi kua tangia tona kauwae ki te moko Maori.
That painting is of Queen Elizabeth, with a moko.

Hei ta etahi, he whakaparahako tenei i te Maori, i te kuini o ingarangi hoki, aa ko te tikanga mo nga rangatira Maori anake tera momo moko.
Some say that it is insulting to Maori, and the queen herself. They feel that only prominent Maori should have that moko.

Ko te whakautu a te tangata nana taua whakaahua i peita, ara, a Barry Ross Smith, ko te putake o te mahi toi nei, ko te whakaatu i te whakakotahitanga o te maori me te pakeha, aa kaore ia i hiahia kia tutu ai te puehu.
The artist Barry Ross Smith said that it symbolised that "we built an entirely new race by signing the treaty" and that it was not intended as an attack on anyone.
