Marae avoids serious fire damage
A fire broke out at a marae in South Auckland today. Manurewa Marae suffered damages to its mattress room and parts of the back of the building from where the blaze started. However it was fortunately contained before any major damage to the wharenui was done. Some people of the community were on hand to activate the manual alarm system. There was no sprinklers installed.

Women's refuge accounts under investigation
The Women's Refuge has come under fire as one of its branches is under investigation for financial mismanagement. The Palmerston North's Te Roopu Whakaruruhau o Nga Wahine suffered a loss of $109,000 last year with a number of unauthorised transactions taking place. The Women's Refuge says that they tried to help their Palmerston North branch fix their accounts, but to no avail.

Olympic uniform reactions and sports roundup
Nationwide there were mixed reviews of the NZ Olympic team uniforms. The collection of uniforms debuted yesterday with the 50s inspired formal wear gaining the most attention. The majority of Te Karere viewers on Facebook reacted negatively towards the designs.

Pouakani outcome could set precedent
Claimants of the Pouakani land beside the Waikato River were successful after the Supreme Court ruled in their favour. The Crown has had ownership of the Pouakani riverbed for over 100 years, but that is now null and void.

Maori and Irish cultures merge for River concert
In two weeks the BT River of Music concert will be held in London. It's an event that will see over 90 singers perform on the banks of the Thames River. This concert will signal the start of the Olympics and a group from NZ is expected to perform there.  They're called Greenfire Island - a group that mixes Maori and Irish cultures.

Matawai a guardian to wildlife creatures
It's a piece of greenstone that guards the creatures of Rainbow Springs Wildlife Park. It's a greenstone of Ngai Tahu descent and a treasure seen by many Asian tourists.
