The pools for Te Matatini 2017 are set.

Forty-eight senior groups from across the country and the Tasman were drawn by Te Matatini chair, Herewini Parata, at a live draw held at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Tākitimu in Hastings on Friday night.

Named Te Kahu o Te Amorangi, Ngāti Kahungunu will host the biggest competition to date in Hastings early next year.

The competition is made up of three pools, Te Ihu, Te Haumi and Te Kei,  each containing 16 teams.

The ice breakers for 2017 are Te Manu Huia from the Auckland region who make their return to the national stage after missing out in 2015.

Te Ihu will also see resident finalists Te Mātārae i Ōrehu, Te Iti Kahurangi and Te Pou o Mangatāwhiri fight their way to another finals performance.

Former national champions, Whāngārā Mai Tawhiti, kick off Day Two of performances. Along with Auckland’s Ngā Tūmanako and defending champions Te Kapa Haka o Te Whānau-a-Apanui.

The final pool, Te Kei, plays host to 2015 runners up Ōpōtiki Mai Tawhiti and former national champions Te Waka Huia and Waihīrere.

A number of groups will get their first taste of the national stage next year including Te Taha Tū from Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Hikuwai from Te Arawa, Hikurangi from Te Tairāwhiti rohe, and a re-invigorated Waioweka from Ōpōtiki.
