The King’s spokesman Rahui Papa confirmed to Te Karere that the King is looking for kidney donors within his immediate and extended family.
Both his kidneys are failing and whānau members will be tested to see if they are compatible.
Rahui Papa says it’s important to maintain the DNA of the Kāhui Ariki (Māori royal lineage) which is why family members will be tested.
Despite his health problems, the King delivered a provocative speech at the ninth anniversary of his coronation where he referred to his illness among other things.
“You all know that I am unwell, and have had a run of several struggles that have slowed me down.
“I’ve tried to stay well and hopeful.
“I’m strong, I’m glad that I don’t complain publically, and I’m determined.
“So if this is what people call positive, then I am also positive,” he finished with a smile.
