Irena graduated from Waiariki Polytechnics Diploma in Journalism in 2003, that same year she started working for Te Karere. After a Year and a half she went to work for Te Kaea News at Maori Television for four and a half years mainly in the field of sports reporting and has been back at Te Karere since October 2009.
