Charity breakfast to restore livelihoods for the people of Ha'apai
To raise awareness and funds for the damage caused in Tonga by Cyclone Ian, The New Zealand Tonga Business Council, together with its members and partners, are supporting Oxfam by hosting a corporate charity breakfast at Beca House on 20 March.
Tropical Cyclone Ian hit Tonga on Friday 10 January bringing winds of up to 270 kilometres per hour and causing almost complete destruction to the northern islands of Ha'apai.
Over 2,000 people have been displaced, 600 homes were completely destroyed, 400 damaged and 85% of the fresh water drinking supply was lost.
Matelita Blake-Hour, from Oxfam's partner organisation in Tonga, The Tongan National Youth Congress helped survey the damage to determine the most urgent needs.
"Houses, trees even plants are destroyed. There's no fruit, no crops, or anything. Some houses have been lifted up and put down somewhere else. I have seen cyclones before, many times, but nothing like this. People are homeless and living in evacuation centres, they've lost everything."
Rachel Afeaki Taumoepeau, chairperson of the New Zealand Tonga Business Council says the funds raised will go towards helping the communities of Ha'apai restore their livelihoods.
"We can help with safe water generation and distribution including the purchase of three desalination water pumps. We can also provide materials to build latrines and donate seeds, tools and fishing gear."
Oxfam has received some support from the New Zealand government and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) but there is a shortfall of $16,000 that is crucial for the recovery of Ha'apai.
