It was 4:35am and the city of Christchurch slept. Then began the rumbling, growing in intensity and the world started heaving sideways.
Time seemed to stand still as the earth rocked.
Those not woken by the noise were soon jolted awake by the quake.
The aftershocks rolled, as did the emotional impact from the near-death experiences.
