He shook his long dark mop at the girls in the mosh pit and they screamed in ecstasy.
Ray Columbus, New Zealand's trail-blazing '60's mod star, was our first truly international pop phenomenon. We still hum and whistle his anthems She's a Mod and Till we Kissed.
They were heady days and Ray Columbus and The Invaders stood alongside the greatest, doing 52 concerts with The Rolling Stones. They also shared billings with the likes of Roy Orbison and Tom Jones.
Now Ray and his band, The Invaders, are being honoured for their contribution to New Zealand pop history.
They're being admitted to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. Some would say it's long overdue.
We celebrate Ray Columbus, a man inspired by pop and political
revolutions, a man ahead of his time.
