They're just kids, some as young as 12, and they're being plucked straight from school into marriage and motherhood. They are the child brides, forced into marriage by their parents, the very people who should be protecting them.

This isn't some tribal ritual being practised in Afghanistan, Pakistan or Africa - it's happening in some suburbs of New Zealand.

SUNDAY talks to one teenager who became a wife and a mother aged 14. We also hear from the women who pick up the pieces when these marriages crumble.

Migrant and refugee women in crisis can call Shakti's 24-hour, toll-free crisis line 0800 742584 (0800 SHAKTI) shakti.org.nz

There is also help and advice available from Women's Refuge.

Or if you are in immediate danger call 111.
