Shorty Streeters and their Dads
Father's Day is coming up on September 6th. We asked
a few Shorty Streeters about what makes their Dad so special and
what Father's Day means to them.
Beth Allen
What qualities do you love most about your dad?
Hes utterly dedicated to our family; crazy-smart;
hardworking like you wouldnt believe; straightforward; fun and
funny.
What is one of your favourite memories spent with your
dad?
I was three years old, floaties on, being taken into the
surf with Dad and floated on the waves. I am pretty sure its why I
am still such a water-baby!
What are you going to do for your dad on Father's Day
this year?
Pretend thats not why were there for dinner, because he
hates being made a fuss of!
Alison Quigan
What qualities do you love most about your Dad?
His charity to others. Dad truly believed in helping others. All
his life he raised money and gave practical help to countless
people through the St Vincent de Paul Society.
His work was honoured by the Pope in 1995.
What is one of your favourite memories spent with your
dad?
Dancing with him at my first ball. He hated dancing, but he did it anyway.
What are you going to do for your dad on Father's Day this
year?
Visit his grave. Have dinner with my brothers and sisters.
Shaun Edwards-Brown
What's one of the best things about being a Dad?
There are so many things about being a dad that I love, it's
pretty hard to pick one.
It seems that every day my kids do or say something that makes my
heart swell.
With my daughter, it's usually the way she cuddles up in bed with
me and wraps my arms around her like a blanket, or when she buries
her face into my neck when she's feeling shy.
With my son, it's the pride in his face when he shows me something
he's created at school, or the way he takes his sister's hand when
she crosses the street.
Someone once described being a parent as 'the hardest job you'll
ever love', and they were right.
There's so much to do and check on and take care of, but something
as simple as a smile makes it all seem ok.
Can you tell us a particularly special memory of time spent with
your kids?
Movie night is great with the kids. We get a bunch of blankets
and mattresses and set them up in front of the TV.
We get far too many snacks and junk food and all cuddle up and
watch a DVD of Toy Story or something like that.
You can spend all the money in the world and go to all the fancy
places for kids these days, but all they really want is your time.
Surprisingly they are the easiest and best times.

What qualities do you love most about your dad?
He knows the best spot to dive for scallops in Wellington.
Well, that and the way I've been able to approach with anything,
knowing I'd have his love and support no matter what. That's
huge.
What is one of your favourite memories spent with your
dad?
When he was on grocery duty, I'd go with him and we'd play
practical jokes. He'd hide peoples' trolleys around the corner and
we'd watch while they wondered how on earth it got there.
The best involves those 5kg tins of spam - he'd mastered putting
them in other carts and we'd watch people wheel them into the
checkout, completely oblivious until it was unloaded.
It was the funniest thing. Once he got snapped putting 10 blocks of
Cadbury king size into a lady's trolley. Haha!
What are you going to do for your dad on Father's Day this
year?
We'll probably be in different cities, but I'll try to make him
feel special from afar!
