From rural NZ to Shortland Street
We sat down with Amelia Reid who joins the cast as Shortland Street's newest receptionist, Bella
How long have you been acting and how did you get your first big break?
Seriously, since I committed to three years at Toi Whakaari,
this is my first big break. But my family tell me it was well
before I could speak.
Name three similarities between you and your onscreen character.
- Foot in mouth disease.
- Wanting to wear too many things at one time.
- A mutual love of people.
What has been your best experience/scene on the show to date?
Working with director Wayne Tourell and realising that acting isn't easy when you have to play ping pong, remember lines and connect!
Which other character would you like to be and why?
Luke Durville, he's ridiculous. I love larger than life characters.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of Shorty?
Working with youth, devising theatre and travelling.
What do you do in your down time during the day when
you're not shooting?
I try to look at it as 'coming to the office'. So I learn lines, get my week together and try to get on top of the scripts. Then I know I can go home and not take work with me.
What is your favourite destination in NZ and overseas?
In New Zealand it's Wanaka. Overseas, Pursat in Cambodia.
Are you single or attached?
What is your date of birth and what star sign are you?
26th April. I'm a Taurus.
Do you have any pets?
No, but I am desperate for a cat.
Who is the actor or actress that you look up to or admire the most?
Cate Blanchet for her versatility.
What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work every day?
That I am a 'full time' actor. I feel extremely blessed that I get paid for playing make believe.
What has been your favorite scene to film in your time at Shortland Street?
Probably my first day in studio. It was terrifying, exhilarating and wonderful.
Are you from Auckland or did you move here to film Shortland Street? Where did you grow up?
I'm from Wakefield, which is a rural village 30 minutes out of Nelson. I then lived in Wellington for six years and recently moved to Auckland.
Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?
I loved working with every single one so far. They are all very different and teach me new things every day.
Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street - what was it like?
Terrifying! Like being the new kid at school.
