Roimata Ngatai
Roimata is the only daughter of a famous paediatrician.
Her father changed the face of paediatric care for Maori children
in rural areas of New Zealand in the 1980s.
Roimata has always been encouraged to work hard and achieve high
standards academically.
When she first graduated she invested a lot of her time doing
education work with rural communities. These included: women's
health, tobacco and alcohol addiction and play therapy with
children.
She started at Shortland Street hospital as a bureau nurse
as she prefers to be anonymous.
As soon as anyone hears her last name they associate her with her
father.
Roimata was instantly attracted to Shorty Street ED doctor, TK
Samuels but it took some time for her to overcome her prejudice
against dating Maori men.
She fell for TK but his ex Sarah Potts arrived back on the
scene - pregnant with his baby.
TK asked Roimata to marry him.
Their wedding day was dogged by disaster, with TK going
missing when he found out Sarah had gone into labour.
TK was diverted en route to help Sarah (abandoning Roimata) by
a car crash on the road, where he rescued the driver Hunter McKay
from the wreckage and flames.
Sarah gave birth to their daughter while Roimata fumed.
The two later made amends and they married quietly in the Bay of
Islands.
Roimata is adjusting to being a step-mum to baby Tillie and
trying to make peace with Sarah.
