Get to Know Lucy Barclay

Lucy plays Trina, a new arrival who might be the answer to TK's mystery.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Lower Hutt, in Wellington.

How long have you been acting and how did you get your first big break?

I started taking drama in year 12 at high school. Then I went on to do a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Performing Arts, at Whitireia Performance Centre and completed that last year. So all up 5 years in training. Shortland street is the first gig I've landed so I'm pretty lucky!

Which other character would you like to be and why?

Kylie! She's my fave. Or Jack love him too.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of SS?

I thoroughly enjoy reading a good book, being in the sea, watching the Kardashians and going to the gym. I'm also doing pole fitness at the moment which is a lot of fun!

What do you do in your down time during the day when you’re not shooting?

I work part time as a receptionist at Les Mills, so I'm either at the gym, running errands, cleaning the house, seeing friends, hanging out with my boyfriend or doing whatever I feel like that day.

What is your favourite destination in NZ and overseas?

In New Zealand - Hawkes Bay. My whole family is from there and it's my second home.

Overseas - Haven't been to many places yet but I always love Australia.

How many brothers and sisters do you have, are they older or younger?

I have two sisters and one brother all younger than me.

What is your date of birth and what star sign are you?

21 March 1995 and I'm an Aries!

Who is the actor or actress that you look up to or admire the most?

Jessica Alba - Always have always will.

What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work everyday?

Being on set and learning from the other actors.

What has been your favorite scene to film in your time at Shortland Street?

It’s a spoiler.

Do you watch Shortland Street at home? If yes, is it strange seeing yourself on television or are you used to it?

Recently, yes I have been. It's kinda one of those shows that you always watch on and off over the years. Haven't seen myself yet, but I'm sure I'm going to cringe!

What is your favourite food?

Ooooohhh that's a hard one. I'd say probably muffins or hot chips

What is your favourite television programme and/or film of all time?

My fave programme would be Keeping up with the Kardashians. And movie... probably Titanic.

Which other actors/actresses do you like working with the most and why?

I really like working with Ben Mitchell, he knows his character so well and when he's reading through a scene he can pick up the subtext so quickly. I have a lot to learn from him.

Have you made any good friends amongst the cast and crew?

Well my boyfriend Tane is also on the show lol (Ali) And I was friends with Jayden, Lukas, Reuben and Grace (Curtis, Finn, Jack and Lucy) before I started filming. So it was really comforting coming to work and seeing their faces. But everyone I've met in the cast are so lovely and I really like some of the crew members too!

Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street – what was it like?

Yeah, I was a little nervous. It was a night time scene on location with Ben so I really didn't want to mess anything up. But he was really nice and cracked jokes which made me feel more relaxed. I was also working with the director Oliver Driver who really knew what he wanted out of the scene and could always offer feedback, which for an actor is ideal! So overall I loved it.
