Get to know: Kate Elliott
Meet Kate Elliot who joins Shortland Street as
Zlata Waldheim, Luke Durville's new fiancee.
How did you get your role on Shortland Street?
I auditioned like everyone else.
How long have you been acting and how did you get your
first big break?
Professionally since I was 14. I auditioned for the role of a
bulimic, sexually abused, self mutilating teenager and jumped right
in.
Name three similarities between you and your onscreen
character.
I like wearing black. I like Bella (played by Amelia
Reid). I'm good at my job.
What has been your best experience/scene on the show to
date?
Meeting all the cast members, it really is a big
family.
Which other character would you like to be and
why?
I'm happy with Zlata!
What are your hobbies and interests outside
of work?
Travel, as much as possible to anywhere I can go. Running
fast as far as I can. Listening to music. Watching
documentaries.
What do you do in your down time during the day when
you're not shooting?
Hang out with my 2.5 year old daughter.
What is your favourite destination in NZ and
overseas?
My favourite city in the world is Tokyo followed closely
by Barcelona. In New Zealand, Piha and Bethells beach.
What is your date of birth and what star sign are
you?
30th December and I'm a Capricorn.
Who is the actor or actress that you look up to or admire
the most?
Ryan Gosling.
What is the thing you enjoy most about going to work
everyday?
I love my job. I love exploring new characters. I love the
environment. I'm very lucky.
What has been your favorite scene to film in your time at
Shortland Street?
I liked arriving at Luke's house for the first time. We
had dry ice, it was all rather gothic.
Do you watch Shortland Street at home? If yes, is it
strange seeing yourself on television or are you used to
it?
I have not watched for a while. I hate watching myself on
TV.
What is your favourite food?
Blueberries.
What is your favourite television programme and/or film of
all time?
Hard question! I love the films Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,
Thumbsucker, Goodfellas, American Graffiti, The
Labyrinth.
Anything with Robert Downey Jnr. or Ryan Gosling in it.
Are you from Auckland or did you move her to film Shortland
Street?
Born and bred in Auckland.
Which other actors/actresses do you like working with
the most and why?
All the girls are great! But I have a lot to do with
Amelia Reid who's just lovely.
Have you made any good friends amongst the cast and
crew?
Natalie Medlock is super fun. I'm sure the more I work,
the better friends we all will become.
What's the best experience you've had with a
fan/fans?
I love meeting fans. I guess inspiring kids to do what
they love and embrace their passions whole-heartedly.
Can you remember your first day on Shortland Street - what
was it like?
Vividly. I was so nervous. I always get nervous starting
a new show...but this is Shortland Street! Scary!
