19 Reasons Why We Love Shorty!
As we gear up toward Shortland Street's 19th Birthday, we thought we would celebrate 19 reasons why we love New Zealand's longest running serial drama.
1. Michael Galvin is a legend!
2. It has very attractive actors of both the male and female
variety for us to perve at!
3. It's been around so long we can't remember what life was
like without it!
4. It shows real NZers on screen.
5. It tackles real life issues in a way that we can appreciate
and learn from.
The series has drawn acclaim for its handling of issues such as
safe sex, AIDS, child abuse, alcoholism, cot death and suicide.
6. It's been a training ground for actors/writers/crew
members/ directors/ the film industry in general for 20 years and
has created work for thousands of people.
7. Because there have been 32 fantastic weddings, each one
more crazy and exciting than the last! (Watch this space
- number 33 could be in the works!)
8. Because it has brought us such fantastic and memorable
lines as "You're not in Guatemala now Dr. Ropata". Classic
Kiwiana.
9. Because it has been the launch pad for many an actor who
has gone on to have an international career. Martin Henderson,
Martin Csokas, Temuera Morrison, Anna Hutchison to name but a
few.
10. Because if Shortland Street wasn't on at 7pm five nights a
week, we would have to watch current affairs shows!
11. Since 2006 we have been able to get double doses of Shorty
on a Monday with Winter one-hour episodes!
12. Shortland Street always finishes up the year with a grand
cliffhanger at the end of the year that leaves us hanging.
Car crashes, fiery explosions, broken hearts, demonic
fiancés - we have had it all!
13. Shortland Street runs for 48 weeks of the year so there is
always plenty of action.
14. Shorty stars are just like you and I and we get to see
them outside of their work on many an occasion.
15. It's one of the fastest turn-around television shows to be
made in the world and makes the equivalent of a feature film per
week.
16. Shortland Street was one of the very first shows in the
world to go carbon neutral - clean and green!
17. We have tackled tricky storylines like civil unions before
any other show in the world.
18. Shortland Street isn't just popular in New Zealand. It
also screens in Australia, Ireland, and the Pacific islands.
In Rarotonga and Fiji, the whole country shuts down at the time
the show goes to air.
19. Next year Shortland Street will be 20 and that means ONE
BIG PARTY! Keep watching as we build up toward a very special
celebration next year.
Never miss an episode of Shortland Street.
