Jared Afeaki is a troubled teen of Tongan heritage that was headed for a life of crime before being taken under Chris Warner’s wing.
The son of Gus ‘Squirrel’ Afeaki, a labourer who was in and out of prison and also Chris Warner’s cell-mate, Jared has been affected by his father’s negative role-modelling, and grew up thinking that crime is an acceptable means of getting what he needs in life.
Following Gus’ cancer diagnosis he began to repent on his criminal past, urging Jared to disassociate from his gang and seek out a more honest way of life. After his father passes away, Jared has decided that he would like to enrol in a mechanic’s course and turn his life around to honour his father’s memory. He is encouraged by the Warner family who he now resides with, but he lacks confidence in his ability.
Jared’s been hardened by years on the street and having to watch his back, and finds it hard to trust others, especially those from more privileged backgrounds. At times he struggles to understand or feel worthy of the Warner’s kindness, lashing out at them. However, deep down, all he wants is a real, loving, supportive family.
He’s picked up an air of cockiness and indomitability from being part of a gang, but underneath this mask, Jared’s holding onto a fear of being alone in the world.
Jared has formed a friendship with Evan and Phoenix, hanging out with them at Sugar or playing video games with Harry.
