Fresh new talent Beulah Koale, who plays troubled teen Jared Afeaki, was born in Otara, South Auckland and is of Samoan descent.
The actor grew up performing in church productions, before getting involved with ensemble theatre company Massive. During his time working with Massive, Beulah has performed in acclaimed shows Havoc in the Garden (2011) and The Brave (2012) – both of which enjoyed critical success and extended seasons.
Beulah also starred in the award-winning short film Maurewa, which was selected for Melbourne and Berlin film festivals and won the Crystal Bear for best short in the youth section at Berlin.
The actor says his best experiences on set so far have been getting to know the cast and crew, particularly the actors who make up the Warner family who have taken Jared under their wing. Beulah is enjoying learning a lot from the more seasoned Shortland Street cast members Michael Galvin and Angela Bloomfield.
If he wasn’t playing Jared, Beulah would love to play a male version of the vivacious Bella Cooper because it would be fun to play someone so immersed in their own world.
Beulah’s family life couldn’t be more different from that of his on-screen character’s. The actor loves spending time with his large extended family, including his four younger brothers and his younger sister. Often they will watch Shortland Street together and laugh when he appears onscreen.
Beulah’s favourite movie is The Lion King and his acting-idols are Denzel Washington and Cliff Curtis.
