It has been confirmed that Auckland will host a stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race.

The government and Auckland City Council have each stumped up $1.5 million to secure the return of the yacht race, formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race.

Details were confirmed at a press conference at Auckland's Viaduct on Wednesday to bring the race back to New Zealand in 2012.

The race, which takes on different routes each time, takes over nine months to complete and was won by the Grant Dalton skippered NZ Endeavour in the 1993-94 season.
