Lack of wind off off Barcelona today kept Team New Zealand and the rest of the fleet waiting until officials abandonned racing on the opening day of the latest MedCup yachting regatta.

The 11-strong fleet of TP52s, representing 10 nations, left the dock just before midday and were sent back to land after almost five hours in the hot Mediterranean sun.

Team NZ skipper Dean Barker said the race committee made the right call because conditions were so light they wouldn't have provided a fair contest.

"It never looked like we would get a race in," he said.

"The breeze hovered around four to five knots and was very unstable. We could see massive holes all over the course."

Barcelona is the third of five events that make the MedCup series, of which Team NZ are the defending champions.

The abandonment reduces the race programme to four days.
