Team New Zealand, bidding to win the inaugural Louis Vuitton Trophy yachting regatta, were left waiting and watching as the breeze died on the French south coast.

Team NZ, the top qualifiers for the knockout stages, have chosen to meet Russians Synergy in one best-of-three semi-final off Nice.

However, on a frustrating day in the Bay of Angels, the crews waited for five hours before the race committee called a postponement.

One match in the other semifinal between Italians Azzurra and Britain's Team Origin did go ahead.

With the wind dropping from about 10 knots to four knots during the short 5.2-nautical-mile contest, Azzurra won by 1 minute 34 seconds.
