A maximum of 90 yachts will contest this year's Sydney to Hobart after entries closed for the great ocean race.

The fleet, which will set sail from Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day, is down from 100 last year.

Initially 102 yachts applied to enter the 2010 race, but 12 withdrew for a number of reasons.

None of the major line honours or handicap contenders were among the withdrawn boats.

The list of withdrawals included Wild Oats X, the sister ship to four-times line honours winner Wild Oats XI, which will be favoured to reach Hobart first again this year.

Wild Oats X, was entered more as a backup boat to XI, with both owned by Bob Oatley.

The fleet will include boats representing all Australian states plus the ACT, UK, USA, France, Italy and Russia.
