The Wellington Sevens looks set to be extended to a three day event next year.

Organisers want the tournament to start on a Thursday night instead of the traditional Friday /Saturday format.

Hong Kong is the only tournament on the World Series circuit currently played over three days.

Wellington Rugby Union Chief Executive Greg Peters says with the 2016 Olympics not that far away, it is a logical move given there is going to need to be a women's component at tournaments.

He says they would need to extend to three days which would suit them down to the ground and they would be open to doing it next year.

Peters says a decision will be made in the coming months.
