Australia were humbled 24-12 by Samoa to end their Adelaide Sevens campaign at the semi-final stage on Sunday.
After a thrilling win over Fiji in the quarters, the Australians were unable to repeat the trick against another Pacific island power, giving up a 19-0 halftime margin they were never likely to rein in at Adelaide Oval.
The Samoans, who knocked out New Zealand, will now be heavily favoured to win the tournament given they will face USA - not a noted sevens exponent - in the final.
Australia earlier scraped through to the semis with a dramatic 26-22 defeat of Fiji after trailing for most of the second half.
James Stannard crossed twice in the dying minutes of the match to swallow up a 22-14 deficit.
Australian captain Patrick McCutcheon ran in two first-half tries for the home side, giving them a 14-7 advantage at the break.
