New Zealand overcame a doged Australia 17-5 to finish top of their group at the Hong Kong Sevens on Saturday night.
Australia scored the first points in the third minute with a slick try making the score five nil.
DJ Forbes was sent from the field with two minutes remaining in the first half for interfering in the ruck.
Tim Mikkelson was the standout in the half making some big runs.
Tomasi Cama got New Zealand back in the game after the hooter, as Lote Raikabula had come within metres of the line before being tackled.
The ball was spread wide to Cama who was unopposed and put the ball down. The conversion wasn't successful leaving the scores level.
Zar Lawrence scored a 70 metre try two minutes into the second spell, stepping past Richard Kingi, and sailing under the bar.
An emotional Lawrence looked to the heavens, after hearing the news of his brother's death back in New Zealand less than 24 hours ago.
Lawrence scored his second try two minutes later, making the score 17-5.
With less than a minute remaining New Zealand were awarded a penalty and Raikabula thumped the ball into Australia's half as the clock wound down.
The final siren sounded as an undefeated New Zealand go through to the quarter-finals top of their group.
