Jonny Wilkinson says he feels as fit as a 20-year-old and has pledged to be back at his best when he resumes playing with French club Toulon next season.

The England flyhalf will join Toulon on a two-year-deal after undergoing detailed medical checks to prove his fitness to the French club.

Wilkinson has suffered a succession of injuries since kicking the winning drop goal for England against Australia in the 2003 World Cup final.

He has been sidelined for six months after dislocating his left kneecap during a club match with the Newcastle Falcons.

"I celebrated my 30th birthday two days ago but I feel like I am 20," Wilkinson, who was speaking in French, told a news conference on Thursday.

"I need to play competitive rugby to settle the last few details in my game but right now, I am 30 and I feel like 20," he added.

"And my knee is perfect, there is no problem."

Although his last injury prevented him from taking part in the current British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa, Wilkinson said it could help him become an even better player.

More time

"I had the opportunity to try and come back in time for the Lions tour but I realised that it was not the case. I realised I needed more time and I have actually had way more time than I needed," he said in English. The next French championship will start on August 15.

"I've had plenty of extra months to get myself ready and to take the time to make sure I am as fit as it could possibly be," he added.

"I have no doubt that when I come back I'll be absolutely ready to go and I'll be a better player for the time I have had away and for the opportunity I have had to learn, to think a bit more and to get an idea of where it is I want to go with my rugby."

Wilkinson said his move from England to France was not all about money.

As well as Wilkinson, Toulon have signed Argentine flyhalf Felipe Contepomi and Scotland wing/fullback Rory Lamont for next season.

They will be coached by former France international Philippe Saint-Andre while former New Zealand captain Tana Umaga is in charge of the backs.

"It has been an easy decision to make as there is everything here - the environment, the staff, the players - to be successful," Wilkinson told reporters in French.

"I can contribute to the club but I also still have a lot to learn as my goal has always been to improve and to win."
