Injured All Blacks and Blues lock Ali Williams has had surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon.

Williams suffered the injury just three minutes into the Blues Super 14 trial match against the Chiefs on Friday night.

Williams missed the entire 2009 season with an Achilles tendon injury.

Blues doctor Stephen Kara is guarded as to when he will be able to return to rugby.

As it was a complete tear through the tendon the surgeon was able to screw the tendon back onto the bone.

Kara says it's too early to tell how long Williams will be sidelined for but the recovery time is generally six months.
