Rookie Chiefs hooker shepherding to success

Published: 8:32PM Tuesday February 26, 2013 Source: ONE Sport

Rookie Chiefs hooker Rhys Marshall is coming to terms with his sudden elevation into the limelight following his Super Rugby debut against the Highlanders on Friday night.

Marshall, 20, who is contracted to Taranaki, was a late call-up to the Chiefs starting line-up and impressed with a busy 80 minutes in the 41-27 win in Dunedin.

The former New Zealand under-20 hooker got a call-up just hours before the match and could continue to see game time with first choice hookers Mahonri Schwalger and Hika Elliot battling injury.

"I was just ecstatic to get a Taranaki contract at the end of last year and then the Chiefs approached me and it has just gone from there," Marshall told ONE News.

The Chiefs kept a close eye on him while he was completing a two-year farm cadet scheme in the Hawke's Bay and he is now a qualified shepherd.

Now firmly in the professional rugby landscape, Marshall is refusing to get too far ahead of himself and is just looking forward to some more game time against the Cheetahs at Waikato Stadium on Saturday night.

"I could injure myself tomorrow night, I don't know, but all I can do is focus and keep learning."

And in a champion team, who showed they are still force at Forsyth Barr on Friday, his rugby education is on the fast-track to success.
