The New Zealand Rugby Union has confirmed it has had talks with league convert Sonny Bill Williams about returning to play rugby New Zealand.

It is understood Sonny Bill is homesick at French side Toulon and wants to play in next year's Super 14 to press his case for a World Cup place.

NZRU Steve Tew told Radio Sport on Thursday they have heard the speculation before.

He says they have talked to him and while clearly he is a class athlete, the fact he is a bit homesick might not be enough to act at this stage.

Meanwhile, Tew says a Hurricanes coaching appointment is imminent but says it's still just speculation at this stage that Mark Hammett has got the job.
