New Zealand have made a strong start to their USA Sevens campaign, easing past Australia 31 - 5 in Las Vegas today.
Fresh from the success of their Wellington Sevens leg last weekend, the Kiwi side started where they had left off without ever getting out of first gear, as they comfortably accounted for their Trans-Tasman rivals.
Outstanding playmaker Tomasi Cama had three touches in the lead-up to the opening try as New Zealand spread it across to the left for Lote Raikabula to charge on to an inside ball and cross the line.
New Zealand were cruising when debutant Mark Jackman recieved quick ruck ball and stepped inside to dot down for an easy converted try.
Australia had a healthy share of possession as the half came to a close although they were unable to capitalise on a four-on-two overlap with tenacious Kiwi defence keeping them out.
Two minutes into the second half, that man Cama ran in try number three after good lead-up work from Jackman and Piutau, before Australia hit back quickly through a great individual effort by flying winger Pama Fou.
A series of penalties against both sides marred the middle period of the half before Cama took another quick-tap close to his own goal line, racing 90 metres to score his second try of the day.
The conversion took them out to 24-5 lead before Jackman scored his second after the final hooter, Australia first knocking down a Cama pass before the new kid picked up the loose ball to wrestle his way over the line.
A comfortable start for New Zealand who next face Japan in their second pool match scheduled for 6.08pm.
New Zealand: 31 (Raikabula, Jackman 2, Cama 2; 2 cons).
Australia: 5 (Fou).
