Don't tell the old school players like Colin Meads or Alex "Grizz" Wyllie, but text banter has been flowing ahead of Thursday's top of the table Air New Zealand Cup match between Hawke's Bay and Canterbury.

It has come between the two number eights, with Richie McCaw squaring off against Crusaders teammate and Hawke's Bay player, Thomas Waldrom.

McCaw has revealed there has been a bit of text message banter between the pair.

However, the All Blacks skipper says Waldrom has become an outstanding player. He says he has showed what he can do getting through gaps and with the ball in hand.

McCaw says he is looking forward to playing from the back of the scrum again although he admits it is a challenge after having not played a lot in the position.

Dan Carter and Isaac Ross also return for Canterbury this week.

Hawke's Bay have made two changes with Hika Elliot returning at hooker, replacing Ash Dixon, while Nick Thompson is named on the right wing in place of the injured Mark Jackman.
