Crusaders captain Richie McCaw feels fortunate to have escaped with a 26-all draw from the Super 14 match against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

Ti'i Paulo scored an injury-time try to draw the Crusaders level after they had surrendered an 18-nil first-half lead.

McCaw says they were very scrappy.

"The Hurricanes got into the game and they put us under pressure. We gave away the ball and made mistakes with our discipline. You can't afford to do that with a team that's got guys like Ma'a (Nonu) and Conrad (Smith)," he said.

The draw allowed the Crusaders to move into second on the table, three points behind the top of the table Bulls.
